De Clutter: Say Goodbye to the Unnecessary

De Clutter: Say Goodbye to the Unnecessary

“Tidy your room”. This is a request I heard frequently as I grew up and one that I probably used even more on my own children. For some reason a bedroom just doesn’t stay tidy!

We all know that this is about more than just having a tidy room, right? Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to keep it clean. It teaches us the importance of principles like; order, saving time, responsibility, and work before play.

How many of you can relate to this story? One day my youngest daughter was resolute about not tidying her room. This moment came after many confrontations about room hygiene. So, one day, I said to her, if your room is not tidy by the time I get home from work tomorrow evening, I will collect anything lying around and put it in a rubbish bag and throw it out. Confident that my hollow threat would have done the trick, I was looking forward to revelling in the sweet victory of another successful parenting moment. Well, I couldn’t have been further away from the truth. Nothing had changed in the status of her room. I had confiscated her belongings, and I was perplexed by the apparent lack of concern from my daughter. She seemed quite ok about the whole matter no reaction at all. So, I had to go and probe, and I asked her. “Does it not bother you that I’ve thrown your gear out. Her response, “Not really, I’ve got plenty of other stuff”

“You only miss something taken from you if you don’t have a spare one”

I’ll be the first to admit, that I have too much stuff so, I go through and do an annual cull of anything I haven’t used in the past year. Getting perspective of why you keep things is important, ensure the reasons that you keep things have purpose and meaning, that will help propel your life forward.

Cassidy Horton writes this about Decluttering Your Life In 6 Easy Steps

1. Identify your “why” for decluttering your life

Before you even begin the process of decluttering your life, stop and ask yourself why you’re doing it.

2. Set some ground rules

Decluttering your life can be difficult because you're forced to confront all the stuff you own, all the stuff you spent money on but never used, and all the stuff that's been buried deep in your closet for years.

3. Answer these questions when decluttering your life

As you go through your belongings, you may come across an item and feel torn on whether you should keep it or not.

- Is this an item I’ve used in the past year?

- Am I holding onto this item because I enjoy using it or because I feel obligated to keep it?

- Does this person I'm following on social media energize me and make me happy, or do they bring me down and make me question my self-worth?

4. Focus on one space at a time

It took years (possibly even decades) to accumulate your stuff. It’s not going to magically disappear overnight.

6. Set goals to hold yourself accountable

We’ve all heard the saying, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Well, the same is true for decluttering your life. Hold yourself accountable by setting SMART goals for when you’ll finish certain tasks.

Once you know how, its relatively easy to declutter possessions.  What about mind clutter, relationships clutter, bad habits? Clutter is clutter and it ultimately will hinder us from being the best version of ourselves. Think about all the areas of clutter in your life that need moving on and apply the 6 steps above.

 My 5 Learnings:

·       Decluttering is beneficial from a personal and possession standpoint

·       Think about and list things that are cluttering my life

·       Revisit my purpose and take stock of what is hindering it

·       Decluttering is an attitude not a one-off project

·       Decluttering makes room for things that will help me move forward

Our lives can be like a messy room, we become so cluttered with business, unnecessary activity, and draining relationships that we lose sight of what is important and why we exist.

My 3 Questions for you:

·       What do you need to declutter and why?

·       Are you part of the clutter problem?

·       How will decluttering help you?
