Goals Require the Right Mindset
Determination, Perseverance, and Hard work.
This year we had a lot of family stay over the holidays. Of course this included the grandies. One of the grandies stayed on with us by herself for a longer holiday. Every day she would swim while I cleaned the pool. Day by day her confidence in the pool was growing but was sometimes clouded with “I can’t” One instance was her climbing out of the pool onto a platform without using the ladder. The top of the platform is about 300mm from the water level. Even with boosting off the bottom, getting on the platform is an effort for an adult. She wanted to try and see if she could get on to the platform. So with the assistance of an inflatable Lilo, I would position her by the platform while she climbed from the Lilo onto the platform. She did this a few times and then wanted to try to do it herself. I started to hear the tone of frustration and a lot of I can’t do this. So I kindly said to her, “If you say you can’t, You won’t, Tell yourself you can” After some time I heard her saying I can do this as she was trying. Guess what? She did it all by herself. All this progressed to her getting onto the platform unassisted and without the inflatable Lilo. Not bad for a 6-year-old who was born with only one half of her right leg.
“If you say you can’t, you won’t”
When you say you can, this is what happens:
1- You believe you can
2- You push through and preserver
3- You look for every reason to support why you can.
4- You build relationship that support your “I can”
5- The “I can” mindset creeps into other areas of your life.
Mindset has everything to do with what you can do, and what you can’t do. Mindset drives your belief, and belief fuels your behaviour.
Often not achieving goals comes down to the wrong mindset. Here is a tip to help strengthen your mindset toward achieving your goals.
Everyday say a mantra that aligns with your goal, why it’s important and reinforces the person you need to be.
E.g. I am (who you want to become) who will/can (action you will take) toward my (chosen goal) so that (your why)
It could sound like this if you were wanting to increase fitness:
“I am an athlete who will train every other day towards running a 10km fun run, so that I can enjoy physical activity with my kids.”
*Take time now to write out a mantra to help change your mindset with something you’re finding hard to break through.
By changing your mindset, you can dramatically increase your chances of goal success. It doesn’t mean to say that it will be easy. It will still require your determination, perseverance, and hard work.
My 3 Learnings:
My behaviour will change with my mindset.
If I say, “I can’t,” it will decrease my goal success chances.
I can adjust my mindset, by saying a daily mantra.
Goals require the right mindset, and with a positive and determined mindset, you can overcome obstacles and pave the way to accomplishment and success in your goal.
My 3 Questions for you:
What mindset are you finding hard to change?
Do you find yourself saying I can’t too often?
When will you start telling yourself you can?
