The Power of a Supportive Mentor
You only know what you know, This is why having the right mentor is so important. In my own life I regularly meet with young entrepreneurs and mentor them. This is a space that I am passionate about. I also meet with people that mentor me. The benefits are amazing as I am learning in both instances, which in turn helps me in being confident in what I do and in advising others.
When I started working with Alex 2 years ago, he had been working busily to build up his business. He was finding some success but wasn’t really focusing on what his vision for the business was. On our journey together and regular mentoring sessions we were able to work through the transitions he needed to be where he is now, focusing on the development and execution of his own designs. These types of transitions don’t happen overnight and are not easy to navigate alone, but they will happen with regular investment. He is now working in a way that is multiplying his return and passion for design.
“Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential media personalities in the world, attributes much of her success to the guidance and support she received from her mentor, Maya Angelou. Angelou, a renowned author, and poet took Oprah under her wing early in her career and provided invaluable advice and encouragement. Angelou not only served as a mentor to Oprah but also became a close friend and confidante. She imparted wisdom, shared her own life experiences, and encouraged Oprah to embrace her authenticity and pursue her passions. Oprah has often spoken about the profound impact Angelou had on her life and career, crediting her mentorship for helping her navigate the challenges of fame and success with grace and humility. Their relationship serves as a powerful example of the transformative power of mentorship, even for those who have already achieved great success.
As you can see in the stories above the right mentor will accelerate your chosen pathway and aspiration.
When I ask my mentees what they find the most helpful, here are some of their answers.
· The opportunity to be asked thought provoking questions
· Having a sounding board
· Receiving practical and helpful advice
· Being held accountable to stay on track
· Creating space and time that I wouldn’t schedule for myself
As you can see, mentorship plays a crucial role in providing guidance, support, and encouragement.
Here are some key things that a mentor can help you with:
Career Development: Mentors can assist mentees in setting and achieving career goals, identifying opportunities for growth and advancement, and navigating career transitions.
Skill Development: Mentors often share their expertise and knowledge to help mentees develop specific skills relevant to their field or industry. This may include technical skills, leadership skills, communication skills, or other competencies.
Networking: Mentors can introduce mentees to important contacts, professionals, and resources within their industry or field, helping them expand their network and build valuable connections.
Problem-Solving: Mentors provide guidance and advice to help mentees navigate challenges and overcome obstacles in their personal and professional lives. They may offer perspective, share insights from their own experiences, and help mentees develop effective strategies for addressing issues.
Personal Growth: Mentors support mentees in their personal development journey, helping them build confidence, resilience, and self-awareness. They may provide encouragement, motivation, and constructive feedback to help mentees reach their full potential.
Accountability: Mentors hold mentees accountable for their goals and actions, helping them stay focused and motivated. They may provide support and encouragement, as well as gentle reminders to keep mentees on track towards their objectives.
Overall, having the right mentor serves as a trusted advisor and role model that guides you along your desired pathway.
