When I was younger, I was competitive in the 100 meters sprint. The finish line was always in my sights. But reaching it wasn’t just about raw speed; it was about the preparation and mindset that came long before the starting gun went off.

I remember the countless hours of training, drilling starts, perfecting my stride, and building endurance. Each session was about refining technique and ensuring that when race day came, I could trust my preparation. But no amount of training could fully quiet the pre-race nerves. The moments before the race were always the most intense. Standing at the starting blocks, heart pounding, muscles tense, I could hear the buzz of the crowd. The anticipation was electric.

Then, the starter’s pistol fired. Exploding off the blocks was crucial. A fraction of a second could make the difference between winning and losing. Staying in my lane required focus, and in those few seconds, I had to rely on the foundation of all my training. Success wasn’t just about speed; it was about vision, preparation, and execution.

Legacy is the Same

If you don’t have clarity on the finish line, how will you know if you're running the right race?

Too many people live reactively, moving from one thing to the next without a clear idea of where they want to go. But legacy isn’t something that just happens—it’s something we intentionally build.

Run Your Race with Clarity

Shaking off the pre-race nerves is like stepping into your legacy—there is no perfect time to start, but you have to take the first step. The key is to begin, even if you don’t feel fully ready. Legacy isn’t left by accident. It’s crafted with vision and intent. Here’s how to make sure you’re running your race well:

  • Define your finish line – What do you want your legacy to be? What impact do you want to leave behind?

  • Stay in your lane – Don’t get distracted by comparison or doubt. Stick to your values and strengths.

  • Train for the long run – Great legacies aren’t built overnight. Daily consistency and small steps add up over time.

The Power of Vision

Just like in a sprint, if you lose sight of the finish line, you lose focus, momentum, and direction. Having a clear vision for your life and legacy ensures that every step you take moves you closer to your intended goal.

"Effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction." – John F. Kennedy

Vision of legacy may not be clear in every area of your life. Take a moment to think about the state in which you want to leave the world and how that will help those who come after you. Legacy isn’t about waiting for the right moment; it’s about making intentional choices every day towards it.
