The Power of Intentional Personal Development
"A few weeks ago, my wife and I embarked on an adventure to walk the Routeburn Track near Queenstown. This 3-day hike was an intentional decision. We wanted to align our desire to be in the mountains with the amazing scenery, experiences, and sense of wellbeing that the countryside offers. I had vividly visualised this experience from some of the pictures I had seen. I not only aimed to complete what I had visualised some years earlier but also to challenge myself in an unfamiliar space. However, the reality proved to be much harder than the picturesque images I had formed in my mind. Fortunately, we were prepared, seeking advice, and surrounding ourselves with people who had completed the track.
I felt amazing on the first day; my energy and fitness were great. But on the second day, the weight of my pack and the challenging terrain started to take its toll on my body. Everything seemed to take longer and became harder. This was a space I had not been exposed to before, and I was grappling with emotions and thoughts that I had to work through – feelings of defeat, isolation, and fatigue. These were additional areas of personal growth that I didn’t expect but needed to face. My resolve was that my reward would be a cold swim in the lake when we arrived at the hut.
Once at the hut, everything became better. We had made it! We discovered that we weren’t alone, as others shared their own challenges they faced. Overall, the experience was amazing; bring on the next adventure."
This is your Journey:
Personal growth is a journey that takes on many forms – accidental, situational, and intentional. However, intentional growth stands out as the most effective and enduring method of self-improvement. As a coach, I'm often asked, "How do I know where to grow?" My response is simple: "Start by visualising the person you need to become." No one deliberately desires going backwards; yet, life's circumstances may sway decisions, affecting our path. Nevertheless, the ultimate decision rests within our control. Here, I offer actionable insights to guide you on your growth journey:
Visualise the Person You Need to Become: Collect images that embody your desired self. Remember, each person's vision will be unique.
Reflect on Your Vision: Seek out a space that fosters inspiration, devoid of distractions. Ponder how achieving your growth objectives will make you feel.
Immerse Yourself: Step into the environments you envision inhabiting. Engage in activities or visit places integral to your growth. The closer you align with their essence, the clearer your path forward becomes.
Research and be Prepared: Nothing will really prepare you for what you visualise; so it is important to research and learn what you will need to know for your personal growth transformation. The rest you will be able to figure out as you go.
Build a Supportive Circle: Surround yourself with individuals who understand and support your growth journey. Their encouragement and understanding will bolster your commitment.
Celebrate Milestones: Break your growth journey into manageable stages. Dedicate yourself to each phase, celebrating achievements along the way. Reflect on your progress to acknowledge how far you've come.
Inevitably, challenges will emerge, testing your determination. Be compassionate towards yourself during these trials. Revisit your initial motivations and the person you aspire to be. If you require assistance, do not hesitate to reach out. Let us embark on this journey together towards personal growth.
